Successful Bid for Training for Recovery Skills and Competency Training Following the submission of a successful bid to the West Midlands Deanery in December 2007, PiP has secured the sum of £25k to develop a programme for the training of anaesthetic support staff working in Theatres – across the Trusts within the West Midlands. Members of the Paediatric Anaesthetic Network and the PAN have been working to develop a training package – to develop a set of required competencies for Anaesthetic and recovery staff – and to agree a way of delivering the training. A number of ways of developing the training have been considered, but the one favoured by the AWG is to agree the competencies and syllabus that a theory course would cover, and then for each hospital in the region to then deliver a one-day course, on a regular basis. By undergoing training with an agreed theoretical syllabus and competencies, staff will be receiving the same level of training across the region. Second ‘Rheum for Improvement’ Day - held on 10th November - Wolverhampton Medical Institute Following the success of the first Parents’ Education day in January, a second day was held on 10th November. The programme responded to the views given by those families who attended in January; it attempted to address the needs of those families with a recent diagnosis of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and to give an update for those who were returning. Young people of secondary school age were invited. They joined the morning presentations and had a separate ‘fun’ session in the afternoon, which gave them an opportunity to meet other young people with JIA. Appointment of Mr Stuart Poynor, PiP Chairman - May 2007 We are delighted that Stuart has accepted the position as Chair of PiP. Stuart is also the Chair of the new Shropshire & Staffordshire Local Collaborative Commissioning Board - LCCB. PiP will be able to present business plans to the LCCB and work with the members of the Board develop "collaborative" commissioning. With Stuart as Chair of both PiP and the LCCB, we should have a head start in getting commissioners to consider any proposals presented to them". In Autumn 2006, Stuart was confirmed as the new Chief Executive of South Staffordshire PCT. South Staffordshire PCT came into being on 1st October 2006, following the merger of Burntwood, Lichfield & Tamworth, Cannock Chase, East Staffordshire and South Western Staffordshire PCTs. Stuart has 25 years of experience working in a number of senior roles within the NHS. Prior to his current appointment, he was Chief Executive of the former East Staffordshire PCT from January 2005. Later on that year, he became joint Chief Executive of Neighbouring Burntwood, Lichfield and Tamworth PCT. He originally joined East Staffordshire PCT in 2002 as Director of Finance. Stuart has a broad range of experience across the NHS having worked in NHS trusts in Leicestershire, including mental health for a number of years. Annual Open Meeting - April 2007 PiP and the West Midlands SHA organised a Joint meeting held on Thursday, 26th April at the Shropshire Education and Conference Centre (SECC) based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The meeting explored together the drivers for change and the options for moving forward in the localities in the West Midlands and beyond. The key-note speaker was Dr Sheila Shribman, National Clinical Director for Children, Young People and Maternity Services. Her document 'Making it Better: For Children and Young People' has recently been published. As a response to the staffing and training issues arising from the requirements of the Working Time Directive (WTD) 2009 - particularly in maternity and paediatric services - the NHS West Midlands SHA, working with the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP), are developing a set of principles to guide local change. Professor Ed Peile from Warwick Medical School - one of the Clinical leads involved in this work - outlined the principles developed and there was an opportunity to discuss the progress of work going on in the localities across the West Midlands and partnership area.
