Paediatric Nurses Workshop & Forum - November

The first Nurses Workshop was held on Thursday, 13th November at Stafford PGMC.  The speaker was Liz Morgan, Professional Adviser for Children & Young People at the DH.

Liz is keen to hear from nurses across the West Midlands about the key challenges that face the profession today, and the issues that will affect nursing in the future.

If you were not present at the inaugural meeting, but would like to know more about the Forum or be involved in any of the groups, please do not hesitate to contact either Alison Wood by email - alison.wood@sath.nhs.uk - or Julia Greensall - at  julia@greensall.com

'Investing for Health' Step 2

In July 2007, NHS West Midlands produced a document - 'Investing for Health - a Strategic Framework for the West Midlands' - which explained how the NHS in the West Midlands was planning for the future. While this plan was being developed, the Government announced the review 'Our NHS, Our future' - which has been led by Lord Ara Darzi.

The SHA have produced a summary report that is both the West Midlands' Our NHS, our Future vision' and ' Investing for Health Step 2: Delivering our clinical vision for a world-class health service'. The report stresses that local solutions need to be found to deliver the changes and these will involved dialogue and consultation with patients, carers, the public and NHS staff across the region.

The second document is a summary of the Clinical pathway report on Children's services. It states:

"Our vision for the development of all children's services is 'to provide high-quality children's healthcare that focuses on the needs of the child and is delivered at home, or as close to home as possible'.

The needs of children and their families will drive this vision. All organisations, including local authorites and the education, health and voluntary sectors will integrate services. Organisational boundaries and contractual agreements will not stand in the way of providing best possible care".

Paediatric Nurses Form - July

The Inaugural meeting of the Nurses Forum, held on Wednesday 2nd July, was well attended.  19 nurses attended,  representing 13 Acute Trusts and 1 PCT. All who attended agreed that there was  a need for such a Forum.

Some of the key issues / challenges facing nurses, that will be considered through the Forum are:
  - considering the impact on nurses of initiatives such as: Lord Darzi's review, Nursing Futures, Future Nurses, EWTD (relating to junior  doctors' hours) and Modernising Nursing Careers;
  - developing particular areas, for example, the Paediatric Surgery Standards relating to the role of nurses / environment issues following the audits PiP undertook ( in 2003 and 2007);
  - the impact of mandatory training on clinical care;
  - the future role of specialist & community nurses - and ANPs - particularly the important roles they will play in the plan to delivery care 'closer to home'.

It was agreed that the following issues were important ones that the Forum should address first:
   1)  Skill mix issues -  including new & extended roles; training - particularly for non-RSCNs  and benchmarking of services.
   2)  To examine the environment where children are seen and treated ie - in A & E  or on a PAU -  and consider how that activity is counted and paid for.  Need to look at tariffs / PbR and present information to Commissioners.
   3) Development of Guidelines / Competencies / Care Pathways.

Small sub-groups are being set up to progress these issues.

The Open day took place on Thursday 9th October 2008 at The Village Hotel, Walsall. The theme of the Open Day was 'Developing Pathways of Care'. We were very pleased that Dr Simon Lenton, Consultant Paediatrician and Vice President of the RCPCH, agreed to give the key note speech. He presented the work that has been undertaken at National Level and combine this with the College's work around 'Modelling the Future' of Children's Services.
