| Paediatric Diabetes Project |
|
| Aim of Project: |
| 1. To review the Paediatric Diabetes service across the member Trusts (Originally 8 Trusts, now 12 acute trusts providing the service)2.Establish a Paediatric Diabetes Database among the members.
At its first conference held in 1999 at New Cross Hospitals, Wolverhampton, Hicom technology introduced their database “Twinkle” and it was decided that all member Trusts will subscribe to Twinkle and initial expense to input the data will be reimbursed by PIP. Most of the member Trusts are subscribed, unfortunately only 3 Trusts are currently inputting the data’s and considerable problem has been due to lack of resources and manpower.
3.Work Load analysis: the implications and impact of NSF diabetes for Children and young people.4. Establishing common Guideline for DKA, Hypos, Surgery.5.Review of current Psychology service across the partnership.6.Resurvey of the current service provisions comparing it with the original survey conducted by Andy Ennis in 1999.7.Education – conference

| About
the Project: |
| 1.Research “Living with Diabetes” its impact on children and their family.
This research was conducted Jointly by psychology Department, Staffordshire university and Department of Paediatrics, Queens Hospital, Burton. The full document is published on PIP web site (see below).2. Resurvey of the current service provision across the partnership was conducted by Dr T Jacob Samuel and was presented at the PIP Diabetes conference in October 2002 at Telford. Details are available bwlow. The final conclusion was even though there was an improvement in the service since the 1999 survey, there is very significant shortage of Consultants, Specialist Nurses, Dieticians, and Psychologists to implement the NSF for Children. Unfortunately we did not receive a favourable response to Twinkle database, we will revisit this again once resource problems are addressed.3. Work Load analysis to meet NSF : PIP has asked Lancaster University research Students to work on the datas available from our local survey and national surveys.4. Conference. The first conference was held in Wolverhampton in 1999 and the second at Telford in October 2002 with eminent speakers. We had a very good feed back and based on this, the next diabetes conference will be held at Stafford on 9/10/03.Future/Next Steps
NSF is a national priority and work load analysis will help up to identify the deficits and PIP will be able to use this information to influence the stake holders. Regular annual one day conference is also our aim.
