About the Project:

Background information:

From the initial work undertaken by the Surgery Project Group, it became clear that a separate group needed to be formed, to address the specific issues related to the delivery of paediatric anaesthetic services - both within individual Trusts as well as across the Partnership area.

Subsequently, an initial meeting of anaesthetists took place in June 2003 in Wolverhampton to explore these issues. The meeting was convened by Andrew Tomlinson from UHNS and Alistair Cranston from BCH. The Trusts involved were those principally from the North West Midlands. Those who attended the meeting were requesting:
Links with specialist paediatric centres for ongoing training sessions
Guidance from the centres about which procedures should be carried out locally and which at specialist centres
Visits from the Centres to “peer review” the services being provided at DGHs.

It was agreed at that meeting that a Paediatric Anaesthetic Working Group should be set up to address the specific issues relating to the delivery of paediatric anaesthetic services, across the West Midlands and the wider partnership area.

A formal Working Group has now been set up and the first meeting was held on 19th March 2004 in Worcester ( see below for Minutes).

Project News:

At the last meeting of the PAN held on 3rd October, it was agreed that Richard Crombie will be the co-Chair of the Network for the next 3 years.  Members of the Network thanked Dori Ann for all the hard work that she has undertaken over the past 3 years.

Recommendations for Acute Pain Management in Children

Members of the West Midlands Working Group of Partners in Paediatrics have developed this generic document which can be used by individual trusts. These guidelines provide direction to medical and nursing staff on the safe and effective relief of acute pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting. They also provide analgesic recipes, contact details and reference sources.
