Paediatric Nurses Forum - July 2008

Wednesday 2nd July 2008

The Inaugural meeting of the Nurses Forum, held on Wednesday 2nd July, was well attended.  19 nurses attended,  representing 13 Acute Trusts and 1 PCT. All who attended agreed that there was  a need for such a Forum.

Some of the key issues / challenges facing nurses, that will be considered through the Forum are:
  - considering the impact on nurses of initiatives such as: Lord Darzi's review, Nursing Futures, Future Nurses, EWTD (relating to junior  doctors' hours) and Modernising Nursing Careers;
  - developing particular areas, for example, the Paediatric Surgery Standards relating to the role of nurses / environment issues following the audits PiP undertook ( in 2003 and 2007);
  - the impact of mandatory training on clinical care;
  - the future role of specialist & community nurses - and ANPs - particularly the important roles they will play in the plan to delivery care 'closer to home'.

It was agreed that the following issues were important ones that the Forum should address first:
   1)  Skill mix issues -  including new & extended roles; training - particularly for non-RSCNs  and benchmarking of services.
   2)  To examine the environment where children are seen and treated ie - in A & E  or on a PAU -  and consider how that activity is counted and paid for.  Need to look at tariffs / PbR and present information to Commissioners.
   3) Development of Guidelines / Competencies / Care Pathways.

Small sub-groups are being set up to progress these issues.
